Ireland’s Cricket World Cup campaign is off to a superb start with an incredible win against the West Indies in New Zealand earlier today – helping to promote tourism from New Zealand, Australia and other cricket-loving markets. Tourism Ireland is proud sponsor of the Ireland team for the tournament.

Congratulations to all concerned and, in particular, to Paul Stirling and Ed Joyce who came so close to centuries, and to George Dockrell for a great bowling performance. As captain William Porterfield said, the win puts Ireland in a great position for the rest of the World Cup.

Former England player, Graeme Swann, described Ireland’s win today as better than their toppling of England four years ago. "This was a team effort", he said, “they have destroyed West Indies and every other so-called big team in the group will have watched this and will be very nervous about them now."

The ICC Cricket World Cup takes place in Australia and New Zealand until 29 March. It is set to be one of the biggest sporting events of 2015, in terms of global viewing audience. It will be televised in 220 countries, to a potential 2.5 billion viewers.
