Exceptional +14% growth – almost 1 million addition overseas visitors – for January-November 2015

We’re on track for a record-breaking year, as Tourism Ireland continues to roll out a number of late-season campaigns around the world, to kickstart our promotional effort for 2016. Today’s figures from the CSO (Central Statistics Office) indicate that this was the best ever January to November period for overseas visitors to Ireland, with more than 8 million arrivals recorded. Overseas visitor numbers have increased by +14% – almost 1 million additional overseas visitors over the first 11 months of 2014. It was also the best ever month of November, with almost 616,000 arrivals, +31% on November 2014. This is really good news, with the increase in visitor numbers from overseas helping to boost economic recovery around the country.

Overseas visitor revenue up half a billion euro and holiday visitors up half a million for January-September 2015

Today’s figures from the CSO (Central Statistics Office) indicate that holiday visitors from overseas grew by +19% in the first nine months of 2015, an additional half a million holiday visitors, with growth recorded from all of our market areas around the world. And, more importantly for the Irish economy, revenue from overseas visitors to Ireland grew by +18% during this period, an additional half a billion euro compared with the first nine months of 2014. Total overseas visitors in the first nine months also grew by +12%, or an additional 659,000 visitors. Niall Gibbons said: “This was an excellent performance and reflects the sentiment we are hearing from our tourism industry partners overseas and here at home. We are determined to ensure that tourism growth continues. Just last week we launched our marketing plans for 2016, which will see us build on this year’s growth to deliver €4.4 billion (+5%) in overseas tourism revenue to the Irish economy, by welcoming 8.2 million visitors, making 2016 another record year for tourism.”

Exceptional +12% growth from overseas for January-July 2015

Today’s figures from the CSO (Central Statistics Office) indicate that this was the best ever January to July period for overseas visitors to Ireland, with more than 4.8 million arrivals recorded. Overseas visitor numbers have increased by +12% over the first seven months of 2014 – an additional 522,200 visitors. This is good news indeed, with the increase in visitor numbers from overseas helping to boost economic recovery around the country. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Today’s figures indicate that this was the best ever January to July period for overseas visitors to Ireland, with more than 4.8 million arrivals recorded. Our aim is to ensure that 2015 is the best year ever for Irish tourism. I am delighted to see that growth has been recorded from all of our markets around the world, with record numbers coming here from North America (almost +15%), Mainland Europe (almost +13%) and long-haul markets (+8.5%). I also welcome the strong increase in British visitors (+11%), our largest market for overseas tourism.”

Overseas visitor numbers have increased by +11.7% over the first half in 2014 – an additional 407,100 visitors. This is good news indeed, with the increase in visitor numbers from overseas helping to boost employment and economic recovery around the country. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Today’s figures indicate that this was the best ever January to June period for overseas visitors to Ireland, with almost 3.9 million arrivals recorded, an increase of +11.7% – or an additional 407,100 overseas visitors – when compared with January to June 2014. Our aim is to ensure that 2015 is the best year ever for Irish tourism. I am delighted to see that growth has been recorded from all of our markets around the world, with record numbers from North America (up almost +15%), Mainland Europe (+13%) and long-haul markets (+12%).”

Overseas visitor numbers have increased by +12% over the same five-month period in 2014 – an additional 329,800 visitors. This is good news indeed, with the increase in visitor numbers from overseas helping to boost employment and economic recovery around the country. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Today’s figures indicate that this was the best ever January to May period for overseas visitors to Ireland, with more than three million arrivals recorded for the five months – representing an increase of +12% in overseas visitor numbers over the first five months of 2014 and with growth recorded from all of our market areas around the world. Our aim is to ensure that 2015 is the best year ever for Irish tourism and we have certainly seen an exceptional performance from North America for the five-month period of January to May – up +14% on the same period in 2014. Ireland now welcomes 10% of all American visitors to Europe – particularly noteworthy given the intense competition from other destinations.” Niall Gibbons continued: “Mainland Europe has also turned in a stellar performance (+14%) for January to May – with important markets like Italy, Spain, Germany, France and Benelux all recording fantastic growth. It’s also been another record five months for our longer-haul markets, up +13%; and I also welcome the strong increase in British visitors (+10%), our largest market for overseas tourism. Today’s figures very much reflect the sentiment expressed by our tourism industry partners overseas, including tour operators and carriers, as well as tourism businesses here at home.”

Ireland ranked number 5 in the world for tourism marketing and branding

The World Economic Forum has announced the results of its 2015 global ‘Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index’ (TTCI). The biennial report includes some positive rankings for Ireland. Overall, Ireland ranks at number 19 in the world, out of 141 countries. In the ‘effectiveness of marketing and branding to attract tourists’ category, Ireland has moved from number nine (when the index was last compiled in 2013) to number five in the world – ahead of France, Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy. Ranking the performance of 141 countries across 14 different categories, the report measures the set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable development of the travel and tourism sector in a country. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “I am really pleased to see that Ireland has moved to fifth position in the world for tourism marketing and branding, out of 141 countries across the world.
